Carbery Group edged Byzmo 55-54, in a battle for twice to beat advantage at the quarter finals of the Grace Alumni Basketball League (GABL) Fellowship Division – World Balance Cup at the newly constructed SGS Stadium in Quezon City.

With both team already assured of quarter finals slot, they must still win their remaining games in the elimination round to get to upper half of the standings were the top 4 quarter finalist has twice to beat advantage over the fifth to eighth placer.

Action was intense and physical immediately after the jump ball as both teams wanted to grab every advantage they can. Jolyon Lim of Carbery Group and Jesse Gaw of Byzmo got entangled in one play, Lim was tossed out of the game with a Disqualifying foul while Gaw was slapped with a Technical Foul barely 5 minutes into the game.

Coach Nelson Dy’s Carbery Group trio of Christopher Tiu, Angelo Lim and Aristotle Chang combined for 21 of Carbery’s 29 points to take a 6 point lead at the half.

Byzmo Team of Coach Max Chua waxed hot after the break and outscored Carbery 19-4 in the third quarter to grab a 9 point lead entering the pay off period.

Carbery Group’s Big 3 again collaborated when it matters most scoring 20 of the team’s 22 points in the last quarter to capture their team’s fourth win in six games.

Tiu and Chang finished with 16 points apiece while Lim had 11 points together with 8 boards.

Ageless Danny Ching led Byzmo with 10 points who suffered their third set back in seven outings.

Tournament aims to strengthen the friendship of Grace Alumni through basketball partners with World Balance in achieving its goal. World Balance is also very instrumental in bringing the league to SGS Stadium, which features a first class basketball court ideal for tournaments and training camps.

In the other game, MK Enterprise got back on the winning track defeating Zoom Couriers, 57-48, behind Denzil Chong’s 17 points.

MK Enterprise of Coach Maynard Chua actually started the tournament with back-to-back wins but suffered four straight set backs after a magnificent start.

Zoom Couriers of Coach Johannes Ngo has lost 2 of their last 3 games after starting the tournament with a 4-0 record. Jiet See and Stephen Chua scored 12 points apiece for the Couriers.

Chicboy-Lipton captured a nail-biting win over Supreme-Olympia, 48-47. Down by 1 with less than 1-minute to play, Manchesteve Uy scored on an up-and-under move between two defenders to grab a 1 point lead and eventually the final score of the game.

Benhur Quing led Chicboy with 14 points while Uy scored his team’s last 9 points to finish with 13.

Supreme-Olympia actually had a chance to win but Manchesfer Uy missed his jumper at the buzzer. Stewart Velmonte and Uy had 10 points apiece for Supreme.

Defending Champion Koba Shutters sailed past Besman Auto Supply, 118-85, to capture it’s fifth win in six games. Besman remains winless after 6 games.

Former National Team coaching staff Reynaldo “Boy” De Vera is the commissioner of the tournament that is also backed up by Alpha Water Heaters, Licton Industial Corp, GCC batch 1978, Bounty Fresh Chicken, Great Wall Cars and Grace Christian College.
